WordPress shows off Telex, its experimental AI development tool

At the recent WordCamp US 2025 conference in Portland, WordPress CEO Matt Mullenweg introduced an intriguing AI development tool, named Telex. He described this early version as a 'V0 or Lovable,' drawing inspiration from popular AI-driven coding services that allow users to build software through intuitive prompts. Mullenweg's keynote highlighted how Telex empowers users to create Gutenberg blocks—essentially the building blocks of WordPress websites, comprising text, images, columns, and more. During his demonstration, he showcased a developer utilizing Telex to produce a straightforward marketing animation, emphasizing the tool's potential. Telex can be accessed on its dedicated site, telex.automattic.ai, and is currently classified as 'experimental.' Users can generate content blocks by entering prompts, which are returned as .zip files that can be easily installed as plugins on a WordPress site or within the WordPress Playground, a browser-based platform that allows users to run WordPress without a host. This launch follows WordPress's earlier announcement of forming a dedicated AI team focused on developing products that align with the company's long-term vision. However, early users have reported that Telex is still a work in progress, with several test projects encountering challenges or requiring further refinement. Despite these hurdles, Mullenweg expressed optimism about the future of AI in enhancing WordPress's mission. He remarked, 'Democratized publishing is at the heart of what WordPress stands for, and AI can help make complex tasks accessible to everyone, regardless of coding knowledge.' He acknowledged some concerns about AI's rapid evolution and potential pitfalls, yet he remains excited about its possibilities. In addition to Telex, Mullenweg also introduced a simpler AI tool developed during Contributor Day, which provides a WordPress help assistant directly in users' browsers. He shared his enthusiasm for Perplexity's Comet, an AI browser that allows seamless interaction with WordPress. On a different note, Mullenweg briefly addressed the ongoing legal disputes with hosting provider WP Engine, which he claims benefits from WordPress's contributions without adequate compensation. He seeks to have WP Engine license the WordPress trademark to clarify the association for customers. He stated, 'The situation is progressing through the legal system, and we trust the courts to handle it fairly.'
