During the 2026 Google I/O keynote, the tech powerhouse unveiled its latest innovation: AI information agents. These advanced tools allow users to create, customize, and oversee multiple AI agents that keep them informed on their preferred topics. This announcement signifies a significant leap toward agentic AI systems that proactively assist with ongoing tasks rather than merely responding to isolated queries. Unlike conventional search engines that require user prompts, Google's information agents function continuously in the background, operating around the clock. This means that users can remain updated on their interests without the need for repeated searches. Rather than simply providing a list of links, these agents synthesize information from various sources, explain its relevance, compare different viewpoints, and offer actionable insights. In essence, these agents represent a new generation of Google Alerts, which was launched back in 2003. However, they extend far beyond basic notifications. For instance, a user tracking the stock market could establish an information agent dedicated to specific companies, share prices, or economic trends. This agent would monitor market fluctuations throughout the day, summarize earnings reports, and alert users to significant changes, complete with summaries and links for further exploration. The capabilities of these agents also extend to everyday tasks. Users can track flight prices for future travels, keep tabs on sports teams and live events, stay updated on breaking news, and monitor trends in the housing or job markets, as well as weather and traffic updates. To utilize this feature, users can activate AI Mode in Search and submit prompts like, "keep me updated on nearby movie tickets for 'The Mandalorian and Grogu.'" When a relevant update arises, the Google app sends a push notification. Users can also view their active tracked topics in their AI Mode history, allowing them to manage, refine, or deactivate alerts as needed. The rollout of information agents is scheduled for this summer, initially available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S., with plans for expansion to additional markets later. Alongside these agents, Google has also announced a significant redesign of its Search interface, which includes a revamped "intelligent search box"—the most substantial change in over 25 years. This new design is tailored to support more extended, conversational queries and features an AI-driven query suggestion system that enhances traditional autocomplete, enabling users to execute nuanced and context-aware searches.
