The oxygenation of Earth’s air might owe a lot to plate tectonics

Planet Earth boasts a remarkable atmosphere, rich in oxygen, which has evolved over billions of years to support life as we know it. While many factors contribute to this phenomenon, recent research indicates that the dynamics of tectonic plates may play a significant role in the history of Earth's oxygen levels. Researchers, led by Wei Shi from the Chengdu University of Technology, have uncovered compelling evidence linking changes in the subduction of tectonic plates with fluctuations in atmospheric oxygen. This subduction process involves tectonic plates sinking into the Earth's interior, and the timing of these geological shifts corresponds with notable increases in oxygen concentration. The history of Earth is marked by gradual cooling and significant geological processes that have transformed its surface. In its early days, the sinking of cold, dense surface rock through hot mantle rock was quite different from today’s plate tectonic activity. Our continents have developed over 4.5 billion years, leading to a complex and non-linear evolution of geological features. Similarly, the journey of Earth's atmospheric oxygen has not been straightforward. The Great Oxygenation Event, which occurred between 2.4 and 2.0 billion years ago, marked a pivotal increase in oxygen levels. However, this surge was followed by a period of stagnation until a resurgence between 800 and 500 million years ago. A subsequent rise from 450 to 250 million years ago ultimately brought oxygen levels to what we recognize today. This intricate interplay between life, geological processes, and atmospheric changes highlights the multifaceted nature of Earth's evolution, suggesting that our planet's oxygen-rich atmosphere is the result of both biological and tectonic influences.
