Android 17 features revealed: What Google Pixel and Android users can expect

Google recently held the Android Show ahead of I/O 2026, unveiling a host of features and enhancements for its upcoming mobile operating system, Android 17. This year’s update emphasizes artificial intelligence, introducing Gemini Intelligence alongside user interface improvements and enhanced security measures. Android 17 will initially be available for Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy smartphones, with plans to extend to other Android devices later this year. Here’s a breakdown of what users can anticipate from this significant software update: **Gemini Intelligence:** At the heart of Android 17 is Gemini Intelligence, which enhances the operating system with advanced AI capabilities. This feature connects Google apps and select third-party services, enabling users to book appointments, search for information, schedule tasks, summarize content, and organize data with remarkable ease. Additional functionalities powered by Gemini include tools like Rambler and Create My Widget. **Quick Share Enhancements:** Following last year’s introduction of Quick Share for seamless file transfers between Android and iOS devices, Google is expanding this feature. Initially available on the Google Pixel 10 series, it now supports a wider range of brands including Oppo, OnePlus, Vivo, Xiaomi, and Honor, facilitating cross-platform file sharing more than ever. **Pause Point Feature:** In an effort to curb the habit of doomscrolling, Google has added a feature called Pause Point. This function lets users designate specific apps—especially social media—as 'distracting.' When attempting to open these apps, a brief 10-second pause screen will appear, offering healthier alternatives like breathing exercises or viewing cherished photos before granting access. **Revamped 3D Emojis:** Android 17 will also debut redesigned 3D emojis, which promise to deliver a more detailed and expressive visual experience. Although Google has teased a few samples, the complete collection will be revealed later. **Enhanced Security Measures:** Security remains a top priority with Android 17. The update introduces robust anti-scam features, including a partnership with select banks to provide call verification against potential scams. This will allow users to block or flag suspicious calls automatically. Additionally, Live Threat Detection will be improved to scan applications for risky behaviors, ensuring user safety. A new feature called “Mark as Lost” will enable more secure locking of devices using biometric authentication, even if someone knows the device's passcode. As Android 17 prepares for its rollout, users can look forward to a more intelligent and secure smartphone experience.
