Mysterious drone flights in NATO airspace have caused alarm across Europe. Heres what we know

Recent drone activity over several European Union nations has raised significant concerns among both the public and government officials. Intrusions into NATO airspace, with some incidents attributed to Russia, surged to unprecedented levels last month. This escalation has led to fears that Moscow is probing NATO's defensive capabilities, prompting a reevaluation of the alliance's readiness against potential threats. On September 10, a swarm of Russian drones breached Poland's airspace, compelling NATO aircraft to scramble and intercept the intruders, resulting in some drones being shot down. This marked the first direct confrontation between NATO and Russia since the latter commenced its comprehensive invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Shortly after, NATO jets were dispatched to escort three Russian military planes out of Estonia’s airspace, highlighting the growing tension in the region. The ensuing weeks have seen additional drone sightings near airports, military sites, and vital infrastructure across Europe. In response, European defense ministers convened to devise a strategy to establish a “drone wall” along their borders, aimed at enhancing detection and interception of unauthorized drone flights. While Russia has been implicated in several of these incidents, officials in Moscow deny any deliberate involvement. Details about the drone incursions remain scarce, with many authorities hesitant to publicly acknowledge sightings until days later. For instance, Danish officials received an overwhelming number of 500 reports of drone sightings in just 24 hours, many of which turned out to be misidentified stars. In Germany, Munich Airport faced closures twice within a 24-hour period due to drone sightings, impacting over 6,500 passengers. Meanwhile, Denmark experienced significant disruptions at Copenhagen Airport on September 22, with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen asserting that Russian participation could not be excluded, calling it “the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date.” On the same evening, Oslo Airport in Norway also experienced drone-related disruptions, leading to investigations into a potential link between the two airports. Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen suggested that a “professional” entity was likely behind the systematic drone flights, as sightings were reported over various smaller airports and military bases in Denmark. Meanwhile, in Germany, authorities are probing claims of unidentified drones surveilling critical infrastructure in Schleswig-Holstein, with sightings reported near a power plant and a hospital. As tensions escalate and investigations continue, European nations are grappling with the implications of these drone activities and how best to respond to ensure the safety and security of their airspace.
