Musk’s xAI is running nearly 50 gas turbines unchecked at its Mississippi data center

Elon Musk's xAI is currently operating nearly 50 natural gas turbines at its data center in Mississippi, a situation that has raised significant environmental concerns. These power plants, sitting on flatbed trailers, are not regulated by the state due to a loophole that classifies them as 'mobile' units. This classification allows them to bypass air pollution regulations for up to one year. The NAACP has stepped in, filing a lawsuit on behalf of local residents who are worried about the deteriorating air quality in an already compromised area. This week, the organization sought a court injunction against xAI, highlighting the potential dangers posed by the unchecked emissions emanating from the turbines. The core issue revolves around the turbines' classification as mobile units. The Southern Environmental Law Center, representing the NAACP, argues that, under federal law, turbines mounted on trailers should still be considered stationary and thus subject to environmental regulations. While xAI has secured permits for 15 of its turbines, local reports indicate that the company is operating a total of 46 turbines, exceeding previous estimates from the Greater Memphis Chamber of Commerce, which stated that only about half of the 35 turbines would remain operational by May 2025. As the situation develops, the implications for air quality and regulatory compliance in the region remain a pressing concern for both local communities and environmental advocates.
