Recently, Donald Trump made headlines by labeling wind turbines a "con job" during a press conference, claiming they drive whales "loco," and pose dangers to birds and even humans. This statement is not just a reiteration of long-standing myths but rather taps into a broader global trend of conspiracy theories surrounding renewable energy, especially wind farms. These conspiracy theories echo historical fears, reminiscent of 19th-century anxieties that telephones could spread diseases. They stem from a deep-rooted distrust of government, a yearning for the bygone fossil fuel era, and a reluctance to embrace the complexities of contemporary society. Research indicates that once such fears take root in a person's belief system, factual rebuttals are unlikely to change their minds. Despite scientific consensus on climate change due to carbon emissions dating back to the 1950s, early advocates for renewable energy were often viewed as challengers to the dominance of major fossil fuel corporations. A vivid illustration of this conflict was depicted in a classic episode of The Simpsons, where Mr. Burns constructed a tower to block out the sun, compelling the town to rely on his nuclear energy. In reality, similar scenarios unfolded when, in 2004, Australian Prime Minister John Howard convened fossil fuel executives to hinder the advancement of renewable energy under the guise of a Low Emissions Technology Advisory Group. Meanwhile, proponents of renewable energy, particularly wind, struggled to garner public support, partly due to existing energy providers being largely invisible. Public opposition was further fueled by health concerns such as the so-called "wind turbine syndrome," which has been debunked by medical professionals but continued to gain traction in public discourse.
