What happened to Amelia Earhart? New book takes on the case.

The enigmatic fate of aviator Amelia Earhart, who vanished in 1937 while attempting to become the first woman to fly around the globe, continues to captivate the public's imagination. Despite numerous theories and tantalizing leads over the decades, the truth behind her disappearance remains elusive. In a compelling new book titled "Lost: Amelia Earhart’s Three Mysterious Deaths and One Extraordinary Life," author Rachel Hartigan delves into the myriad of speculations surrounding Earhart's fate. Hartigan, a former editor for The Washington Post's Book World, brings her extensive experience from National Geographic, where she covered diverse subjects ranging from botany to women's rights. Feeling a lack of comprehensive works on Earhart that encapsulated all theories and narratives, Hartigan set out to fill that void. "You get these news stories of people claiming they know where Amelia Earhart is, but you miss the broader context," she stated in an interview. Hartigan’s journey into the world of Earhart began unexpectedly during a 2017 expedition to Nikumaroro Island, funded by National Geographic, aimed at uncovering any evidence related to Earhart and her navigator, Fred Noonan. Initially indifferent toward Earhart, she found herself drawn into the mystery when her editor invited her to join the expedition. This experience led to two feature articles and eventually the creation of her book, which aims to provide a holistic view of Earhart’s life and the speculation surrounding her disappearance.
