In 1495, King Charles VIII of France led a massive military campaign in Naples, marking a pivotal moment in the history of syphilis in Europe. His army, comprising around 20,000 mercenaries, is often cited as the epicenter of the so-called 'Great Pox,' which resulted in an estimated 5 million deaths across the continent. Traditionally, this siege was viewed as the introduction of syphilis into European society. However, recent research has unveiled a much older narrative. Elizabeth Nelson, an anthropologist from Southern Methodist University, and her team have discovered a 5,500-year-old genome of Treponema pallidum, the bacterium responsible for syphilis, in a burial site in Colombia. This groundbreaking finding indicates that the pathogens associated with syphilis and similar diseases have been present for thousands of years, predating European awareness of the disease. This revelation challenges longstanding assumptions about the disease's origins. While the French occupation of Naples did not bring syphilis into the world, it did set the stage for a narrative that shaped public perception for generations. The diverse composition of Charles VIII's forces, which included soldiers from various European nations, and the king's notorious reputation for promiscuity, exacerbated the spread of the disease during this tumultuous period. Chroniclers of the time, such as Johannes Burckard, documented Charles's cavalier attitudes towards relationships, reflecting behaviors that were echoed among his troops. This research not only reshapes our understanding of syphilis but also emphasizes the complexity of its historical narrative, suggesting that our interpretations may have been oversimplified for centuries.
