By fabricating resumes and, in some cases, receiving assistance from American accomplices, these impostors have infiltrated the job market. This situation has become increasingly problematic, especially given that North Korea is heavily sanctioned by the United States and European nations due to its controversial nuclear weapons program, which prohibits companies from hiring North Korean nationals. In an innovative approach to identify these potential fraudsters during job interviews, a strategy has surfaced: interviewers can ask applicants to insult Kim Jong Un. Given the severe penalties for such actions in North Korea, including imprisonment, this tactic serves as a litmus test. Although widely known, tangible examples of its effectiveness are scarce, until now. A recently viral video captured a job interview conducted via video call, where the interviewer requested the candidate to declare, "Kim Jong Un is a fat ugly pig." The response from the applicant was telling; visibly uneasy and seemingly unable to comply with the request, they feigned confusion before abruptly exiting the interview. This moment highlighted the challenge faced by North Korean impostors in maintaining their facade. While this technique has proven effective in certain cases, it is not foolproof. Some North Korean IT workers, particularly those residing in China or Russia, may experience less stringent oversight compared to those still within North Korea's borders. Thus, while the strategy can serve as a valuable tool in detecting deception, it is not guaranteed to work in every instance.
