Speaking at the UBS Asian Investment Conference, he underscored how the ongoing conflicts in Iran and Ukraine are reshaping the landscape of military engagement. Petraeus emphasized that the surge in drone usage in combat zones not only signifies a rising threat but also calls for enhanced defensive measures. "Much of this is going to be all about unmanned systems and the defenses against them, which have not been adequate in this case," he remarked. He acknowledged that while achieving perfect defense may be unattainable, significant improvements are essential. The proliferation of drone technology, particularly in the Middle East, is compelling nations to bolster both their offensive and defensive capabilities. For instance, Iran's cost-effective Shahed drones have been integral to various conflicts and proxy skirmishes, contrasting sharply with the high costs associated with traditional air defense systems. Estimates suggest that a Shahed drone costs between $20,000 and $50,000, while intercepting missiles can run into the millions. Petraeus warns that the financial implications of countering threats from Iran are only the beginning. He cited the impact of drones on critical infrastructure, such as Qatar's liquefied natural gas production, underscoring the real-world consequences of unmanned aerial vehicles in warfare. Looking ahead, he predicts that the military's reliance on unmanned systems will evolve, transitioning towards autonomous drones capable of swarming tactics that could outmaneuver existing defense systems. Drawing from his observations in Ukraine, Petraeus praised the adaptability of Ukrainian forces in deploying their own drones and countering Russian aerial threats using interceptor drones and electronic warfare tactics. Petraeus believes that the advancement of unmanned systems represents a substantial investment opportunity within the defense sector.
