Study: How to take the “urban pulse” of a city

Cities have often been likened to living entities, and a recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that they indeed possess a measurable 'urban pulse' that reflects their metabolic activity. This innovative research, led by Zhe Zhu from the University of Connecticut, offers a new perspective on urbanization, emphasizing its dynamic nature and the patterns that can inform public policy for urban planning. Zhu and his team defined urbanization broadly, encompassing six key dimensions: demography, economy, infrastructure, environment, governance, and culture. These interconnected processes yield measurable outcomes, such as population growth, urban land expansion, and economic development, highlighting cities as evolving ecosystems rather than static entities. Historically, urban studies have focused on tangible outcomes like new buildings or road expansions, but Zhu argues that this approach misses the underlying dynamics of urban life. Their research aims to change that, providing a powerful tool for both government policymakers and everyday citizens navigating urban environments. In the future, individuals might even check a neighborhood's 'urban pulse' while searching for homes or scouting business locations. Utilizing advancements in remote sensing and analytical techniques, the study harnesses diverse data sources, including satellite imagery and geolocated social media information. The analysis conducted by Zhu and his colleagues drew on data from NASA's Harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 databases, examining new construction and infrastructure changes in six major cities: Seattle, Shenzhen, Lagos, Mumbai, Dubai, and Mexico City. Their findings revealed three distinct 'vital signs' for urban monitoring. One key observation was that urbanization is characterized by 'spiky' activity, with sharp, brief surges rather than steady growth. Dubai exemplified this trend with significant spikes in redevelopment efforts, particularly in luxury projects along its coast. In contrast, Shenzhen exhibited clustered spikes, indicating the city’s ability for rapid state-led capital mobilization and construction.
