OpenAI has unveiled its latest innovation, the ChatGPT Atlas browser, which is set to elevate the competition in the AI-powered browsing sector. This new browser marks an expansion of OpenAI's product offerings, joining the ranks of ChatGPT and Sora as the company aims for aggressive growth in the coming years. Currently, Atlas is exclusively available for Mac users. While the browser itself can be downloaded for free, its standout feature, Agent Mode, is limited to Pro, Plus, and Enterprise users. OpenAI has plans to extend Atlas to iOS, Android, and Windows, although a specific timeline for these releases has yet to be announced. To get started with Atlas, users can visit chatgpt.com/atlas to download the application. After logging in with a ChatGPT account, users can import their bookmarks, passwords, and browsing history from Chrome, Safari, or Firefox. Setting Atlas as the default browser is a simple process, easily done through the settings menu. One of the key features of Atlas is the integration of ChatGPT, which appears in a sidebar for easy access. Users can utilize the chatbot for a variety of tasks, including drafting emails, coding, autofilling forms, summarizing webpage content, and answering related inquiries. The browser also incorporates memory, allowing ChatGPT to remember visited sites and user interactions, which helps in personalizing responses. Users can engage with ChatGPT in Atlas by posing queries such as, "Find all the job postings I was looking at last week and create a summary of industry trends for my interview preparation." Notably, the browser's memory functionality is optional, and users can manage it through the settings. Unlike conventional browsers, Atlas routes searches through ChatGPT rather than traditional engines like Google or Bing. OpenAI has enhanced the search experience by introducing contextual tabs for various types of searches, including traditional results, images, videos, and news. When selecting search results, Atlas presents them in a split view alongside the chat sidebar, making multitasking more efficient. The introduction of Agent Mode is particularly noteworthy, empowering the browser to perform tasks on behalf of the user, such as making restaurant reservations, ordering groceries, creating shopping lists, and handling complex tasks seamlessly. OpenAI is also streamlining text editing within Atlas. Users can highlight text in an email and directly click the ChatGPT icon to refine the content or adjust its tone, eliminating the need to switch between tabs or copy and paste information.
