In a recent discussion, Lovable CEO Anton Osika shared the four crucial qualities he seeks in potential hires for his vibe coding startup. During an interview, he emphasized the importance of candidates demonstrating 'slope, breadth, curiosity, and a bias to build.' Osika explained that 'slope' pertains to a candidate's capacity to learn and adapt rather than their existing skills. He values the ability to quickly grasp new concepts and navigate challenges, stating, 'I care more about how fast someone learns and adapts than where they are today. If a conversation feels alive, if I walk away having learned something new, that's a strong sign they'll thrive in the team and push our ways of working forward.' The second trait he looks for is versatility, preferring generalists over specialists. Osika believes it’s better to hire individuals who possess a range of skills—such as design, coding, and product thinking—rather than someone who excels in just one area. 'Range matters when you're building new categories,' he noted. Osika also values 'first principles thinking,' which he describes as the ability to question established norms and seek foundational truths. He noted that this kind of curiosity often leads to innovative solutions, referencing Elon Musk's perspective on first principles thinking as a method to generate groundbreaking ideas. Finally, Osika seeks individuals who are 'builders, not talkers.' He prefers team members who can deliver results, iterate on ideas, and bring concepts to life, whether that means launching a product or developing a prototype. In a competitive landscape for AI talent, with companies like Meta and Microsoft offering substantial signing bonuses, Osika believes that simply increasing compensation isn’t the solution. He stated, 'If I knew who was the perfect engineer to hire, I could maybe step up our compensation bands to get exactly those. But I don't know who are the best people.' Instead, he focuses on identifying individuals who are not only skilled but also adaptable and collaborative, ensuring a strong team dynamic at Lovable.
