Securing a position at OpenAI often demands a robust technical background, experience with leading companies, and a deep-rooted passion for artificial intelligence. However, according to Nick Turley, the head of ChatGPT, true success at OpenAI hinges on an employee's ability to navigate the unknown without a predefined blueprint. In a recent interview on Lenny Rachitsky's tech podcast, Turley emphasized the significance of starting fresh with each project. "There is no direct analogy for what we're building here," he remarked. OpenAI's pursuits cannot simply replicate established features from tech giants like Google or Instagram. Instead, Turley believes that innovation stems from a foundation laid from scratch, which is a quality the company actively seeks in its hires. Turley also shed light on OpenAI's approach to releasing new features. Following the recent launch of GPT-5, which received a mixed reception, he noted that OpenAI deliberately rolls out elements that may not be fully polished. "We face criticism for our model chooser," he shared, referencing the now-removed dropdown feature in ChatGPT that allowed users to select from different models. Turley explained that releasing a raw product can be more beneficial, as it facilitates immediate user feedback, crucial for refining the technology. He argued that many companies hesitate to launch products until they meet a high-quality standard, but this strategy can lead to focusing on the wrong aspects. "You won’t know what to refine until after you release it," he stated, highlighting the unique challenges of developing emergent technologies. The recent rollout of GPT-5 exemplifies this philosophy in action. After user feedback led to criticism of the model switcher, OpenAI replaced it with a more intuitive "real-time router" that automatically selects the best model for each query. Turley’s colleague, COO Brad Lightcap, elaborated on the previous user experience with the model picker, describing it as potentially confusing. Despite efforts to enhance user satisfaction, not all feedback has been positive. Following the introduction of GPT-5, some users expressed disappointment over the unavailability of a previously popular model. In response, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman indicated that the team would consider reintroducing it to appease their user base.
