Priscilla Chan's recruiting pitch? We can't pay as well as tech companies, but we've got GPUs

In a recent episode of Ashlee Vance's podcast, "Core Memory," Priscilla Chan, cofounder of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) and wife of Mark Zuckerberg, emphasized the significance of GPU access in attracting top-tier scientific talent. Chan pointed out that while competitive salaries are important, the availability of robust computing resources, particularly GPU clusters, is crucial for researchers to maximize their potential. CZI currently boasts a formidable cluster of approximately 1,000 GPUs, with intentions to expand this capacity further. Chan’s message to researchers is clear: "Join us, and benefit from the computational power that can drive your research forward." Acknowledging the challenge of competing with tech giants in terms of salary, Chan stated, "We cannot compete with tech companies on this front." This acknowledgment comes as CZI refines its mission, transitioning into a more focused role as a science-first philanthropic organization. Chan revealed that while CZI remains dedicated to education and community support, science will be where the organization channels its major investments moving forward. Mark Zuckerberg has also highlighted the importance of GPU resources in recruitment during a recent appearance on The Information's TITV show. Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is investing heavily in its AI division, known as Superintelligence Labs, and plans to have 1.3 million GPUs by the end of 2025. Zuckerberg noted that having the most computing power per researcher is a strategic advantage not only for research endeavors but also for attracting the best talent in the field.
