New Android features in Google’s October system update you should not miss

Google has launched its latest monthly system update for October, delivering a host of enhancements for Android devices, including phones, tablets, Wear OS, Android TV, Auto, and PCs. This update emphasizes security improvements, upgrades to Wallet functionalities, and better recommendations in the Play Store, along with ongoing bug fixes across essential system applications. Among the key changes, the newest version of Google Play services (v25.41) brings significant security upgrades. Users can now complete reCAPTCHA web verifications directly from their devices, streamlining the process of verifying identity online. Additionally, Google Password Manager has improved features, allowing users to view and delete hidden passkeys, thereby giving them greater control over their stored credentials. A new Advanced Protection page has also been introduced, providing insights into which apps request sensitive security permissions, enhancing transparency in data protection. This month's update also significantly enhances Google Wallet. Users can now add cards seamlessly through supported banking apps, eliminating the need to manually input card details. For those using Android 12 or earlier with loyalty passes imported from Gmail, notifications will now be sent if the Wallet app is installed. One of the standout features is the introduction of Live Updates for travel, which allows real-time information regarding flights, train schedules, and events to be directly accessible within Wallet, making trip management a breeze. On the development front, this rollout includes new APIs designed to facilitate ad-related processes, enhancing integration between Google and third-party applications. A prior update (v25.40) had already expanded support for functions related to Maps and enabled LE Audio device pairing across multiple components, paving the way for improved Bluetooth audio experiences. With Google Play Store version 48.5, Android users will now have access to personalized content tailored to their installed applications. This new feature, located within the Play Collections section, curates similar titles and media for a more engaging experience. Furthermore, Google is expanding its payment ecosystem as users in Mongolia can now purchase in-app products and subscriptions across phones, TVs, Wear OS devices, and PCs. Other system components, including Android System Intelligence (v39) and Private Compute Services (v35), have received maintenance updates aimed at enhancing stability. These updates address issues like LLM (large language model) interaction crashes, boost database reliability, and improve animation performance. As always, Google advises that not all features listed in the changelog will be visible to every user immediately, as some capabilities are rolled out gradually and may take weeks or even months to reach all devices.
