In India, many individuals face the frustrating experience of having their loan or credit card applications rejected, often receiving little to no explanation for the decision. As digital lending options proliferate through apps and fintech platforms, a significant concern is surfacing: users are entering the credit landscape faster than they can comprehend its intricacies. A recent study titled "The Hidden Cost of Not Knowing: State of Credit Score Awareness in India" reveals that approximately 30% of Indian borrowers have encountered rejection without understanding the reasons behind it. This situation prompts a critical question for the country's fintech sector: Can artificial intelligence assist individuals in grasping and enhancing their financial profiles to prevent such rejections? The challenges extend well beyond isolated cases of denial. The report indicates that 45% of survey participants either had never checked their credit score or were uncertain if they had done so. Furthermore, over 400 million adults in India lack a formal credit history. Many consumers embark on their financial journeys through products they do not fully understand. Interestingly, while 75% of respondents claimed to have a grasp of credit scores, the study uncovered substantial gaps in knowledge. For instance, more than 58% mistakenly believed that checking their own credit score would negatively impact it, while 25% associated credit scores directly with their salary levels. Such misunderstandings, though seemingly minor, can lead to significant financial repercussions. For example, a small variance in credit score could result in a borrower paying an additional 1.6% on a home loan, costing them nearly ₹8.6 lakh over two decades. As the accessibility of credit products increases, industry experts argue that the core issue lies not in access itself but in the interpretation of credit information. Anand Agrawal, co-founder of FixMyScore and Credgenics, labeled this scenario as a "credit paradox." Despite having one of the fastest-growing digital lending landscapes, many borrowers continue to receive rejections without any accompanying explanation. Agrawal stated, "The silence surrounding these rejections is not only frustrating but financially devastating for countless aspirational Indians who remain in the dark about what went wrong or how they can rectify it." He emphasized that conventional lending practices often function as opaque systems. AI-driven credit advisory solutions could revolutionize this process by pinpointing specific factors contributing to weak credit profiles and suggesting corrective measures. Similarly, Pramod Kathuraia, founder and CEO of Easiloan, noted that many consumers only learn of credit issues after facing application denials. He believes AI can analyze various factors like repayment behavior, account age, and credit utilization to offer tailored advice prior to the submission of applications. Vikkas Goyal, founder of VimanoTech, echoed these sentiments, highlighting that transparency is a significant hurdle in India's credit landscape. He asserted that AI systems can evaluate financial behaviors and identify the precise elements affecting lending decisions. The broader opportunity lies in empowering borrowers with knowledge on how to improve their credit standings, rather than simply informing them of a failed application. As India continues to promote financial inclusion, AI may increasingly be seen not merely as a predictive tool for rejection but as a means to provide clarity and understanding in the credit process.
