Marc Andreessen shares the prompts he says turn AI into 'the world's best coach'

Mastering the art of prompting is essential when it comes to leveraging AI's capabilities. In a recent episode of the 'a16z Podcast,' venture capitalist Marc Andreessen emphasized that AI can serve as an unparalleled coach and mentor, provided users ask the right questions. Andreessen, co-founder of Andreessen Horowitz, highlighted that AI represents possibly the most accessible technology ever, available through apps that anyone can download. According to him, the true strength of AI is revealed when users engage with it as a collaborative thought partner. He stated, "Part of the art of AI is understanding what questions to pose." He provided practical examples involving a small business scenario, such as a bakery owner utilizing AI to analyze everything from staffing schedules to marketing copy. By allowing the AI to critique these inputs, business owners can gain valuable insights. He also suggested that product development can follow a similar approach. For instance, if one were to ask AI for the best cinnamon roll recipe, they could then work backward to enhance their own recipes or even optimize for cost-efficiency. Andreessen recommended using meta prompts to guide users in formulating effective queries. These prompts can help identify blind spots and refine one’s approach to interacting with AI. He suggested asking the AI, "What questions should I be asking?" or "Teach me how to use you in the best way." This philosophy on prompting is echoed by other tech leaders. Andrew Ng, founder of Google Brain, noted at the Masters of Scale Summit 2025 that extended conversations with AI lead to better outcomes. He shared that he often uses AI in voice mode to brainstorm ideas while driving, illustrating how context is crucial for productive interactions. Moreover, EY's Americas chief technology officer, Matt Barrington, explained that managing context is vital. He organizes his AI interactions into separate 'workspaces' tailored for different tasks, such as technical inquiries or client communications. By setting clear guidelines for the AI's responses, such as requesting concise summaries or expert-level insights, he maximizes the effectiveness of AI in his work. As AI continues to evolve, the ability to ask the right questions will remain a key factor in unlocking its full potential.
