Anthropic's resident philosopher shares her tips to create the best AI prompts

Clear and precise communication is fundamental in philosophy, and it plays a crucial role in maximizing the effectiveness of AI models, as noted by Amanda Askell, a philosopher and technical team member at Anthropic. On a recent episode of Anthropic's 'Ask Me Anything' podcast, Askell shared insights on the delicate balance needed in crafting effective prompts. Drawing from her education in philosophy at prestigious institutions like Oxford and New York University, Askell emphasized the importance of engaging with AI models frequently and analyzing their outputs. She believes that effective prompters must adopt a highly experimental mindset. However, her philosophical background offers additional insights that enhance the prompting process. "A significant part of my role involves articulating issues or thoughts to the model as clearly as possible," she explained. This focus on clarity is essential, not just for refining prompts but also for fostering a deeper understanding of AI systems. In a 'Prompt Engineering Overview' released in July, Anthropic described their chatbot, Claude, as akin to a brilliant but inexperienced employee who requires clear direction. The company advised that users should provide explicit instructions, as Claude lacks context regarding personal norms, styles, or preferences. The more specific the user is about their needs, the more accurate Claude’s responses will be. Adding to this conversation, veteran venture capitalist Marc Andreessen remarked that the true potential of AI lies in treating it as a 'thought partner.' He highlighted that mastering the art of asking the right questions is key. Those who excel in this area can find themselves in high-demand roles as prompt engineers, a position that currently has a median salary of $150,000, according to levels.fyi, which provides salary insights for tech professionals.
