Great hybrid V6, lousy HMI: Three days with a Ferrari 296 GTB

During my initial drive of the latest mid-engined Ferrari, I navigated a meticulously chosen route through the picturesque Po Valley into the Apennines. The winding roads and sharp inclines provided an exhilarating experience, though the limited time made it challenging to fully explore the car's advanced features. The ride was impressively firm yet comfortable over the bumpy Italian roads, and switching to the electric-only mode was a breeze as I cruised through the quaint villages. Fast forward to last month, where I had the opportunity to reconnect with the Ferrari 296 GTB at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, alongside the thrilling World Endurance Championship. This time, I enjoyed a more leisurely three-day experience, significantly more time to delve into what the 296 has to offer. Heading west from Austin, the serpentine roads beckoned, but I opted for a mix of driving experiences, from scenic routes to urban environments, all while keeping the racetrack in mind. In the hustle and bustle of downtown, where autonomous vehicles like Waymo Jaguars and Zoox Toyotas were abundant, the Ferrari's eDrive mode excelled. Its axial flux electric motor seamlessly integrates with the 2.9 L V6 engine and eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, delivering 165 hp (123 kW) and a robust torque of 232 lb-ft (315 Nm) to efficiently maneuver the car’s approximate weight of 3,300 lbs (1,500 kg) in city traffic. Visibility from the driver's seat is commendable, and the throttle response allows for precise control of acceleration. Venturing beyond the city limits, the true power of the V6 engine, boasting 654 hp (488 kW), comes to life. The 296 GTB offers three driving modes tailored for different scenarios. In Hybrid mode, the intelligent system optimizes fuel efficiency by managing the V6's engagement based on the charge level of the lithium-ion battery. However, when the battery depletes, switching to Performance mode engages the internal combustion engine fully, ensuring a thrilling driving experience accompanied by an exhilarating sound. This comprehensive evaluation of the Ferrari 296 GTB reveals not only its impressive hybrid capabilities but also its capacity for exhilarating performance, making it a remarkable addition to the supercar realm.
