Gazelle’s new Arroyo: A high-end commute bike

Recently, I had the pleasure of testing out Gazelle's new Arroyo model, a bike designed for urban commuting that boasts a host of impressive features. Unlike a previous experience with a heavy cargo bike, this model allowed me to truly appreciate its innovative drivetrain, which includes continuous variable gearing and a belt drive system. By stripping away the bulk, the Arroyo demonstrated the potential of this technology in a more agile package. This bike is not just about performance; it is crafted with the rider's comfort in mind. The Arroyo includes thoughtful design elements that enhance the overall riding experience. However, with such premium features comes a premium price tag. The Arroyo series is targeted at commuters and those who navigate urban and suburban environments, featuring a step-through frame, a spacious rack, and fenders, all while promoting an upright riding position. Staying true to its Dutch roots, the Arroyo is designed for traditional cycling rather than resembling a scooter. It lacks a throttle, ensuring that riders engage in pedaling, even when using the maximum assist setting. Thus, those seeking a sweat-free ride in hot conditions may want to consider other options. Gazelle offers three different Arroyo versions, starting with the base model equipped with a conventional chain drive and a less powerful electric assist priced at $3,000. I had the chance to review the top-tier C380 Elite, which adds $1,500 to the cost, delivering a more robust Bosch motor with 75 Nm of torque, an upgraded display, and the advanced belt drive. This mid-drive motor, complemented by a torque sensor, offers optimal performance for the urban cyclist.
