Musk and Trump both went to Penn—now hacked by someone sympathetic to their cause

The University of Pennsylvania, known for being the alma mater of prominent figures Elon Musk and Donald Trump, has recently found itself at the center of a cyberattack. This incident comes on the heels of increasing political pressure from the U.S. government regarding issues such as funding and the university's handling of sensitive topics. Over the past year, as both Musk and Trump have gained political traction, the university faced scrutiny, leading to the withdrawal of federal research funding and criticisms over its policies related to a transgender swimmer. In an unusual twist, Penn was approached with a proposal for a “compact” with the federal government, which would have granted the government extensive oversight in exchange for favorable funding opportunities. However, Penn opted not to sign this agreement, adding another layer of complexity to its current predicament. The hacking incident occurred on October 31, when an attacker employed sophisticated social engineering techniques to gain unauthorized access to the university's systems. This breach allowed the hacker to infiltrate various platforms, including Salesforce, SharePoint, and Box, compromising sensitive data. Reports indicate that the hacker accessed a confidential donor database, which includes personal identifying information, memos regarding donors, and financial transaction records. Some of this sensitive information has already surfaced on LeakForums, raising concerns about the implications of this breach amid the ongoing political climate.
