Hackers threaten to leak data after breaching University of Pennsylvania to send mass emails

Early Friday, the University of Pennsylvania experienced a significant security breach as hackers sent out deceptive emails to alumni, students, staff, and community members. The messages, which claimed to be from the university’s Graduate School of Education (GSE), included alarming statements about the institution's security practices and threatened to leak sensitive data. The emails, originating from various Penn-affiliated accounts, stated, "We have terrible security practices and are completely unmeritocratic," and provocatively hinted at non-compliance with federal regulations like FERPA, emphasizing that all personal data could be exposed. Recipients reported receiving these messages multiple times from different official @upenn.edu email addresses. In response, university spokesperson Ron Ozio confirmed that the institution's incident response team is actively working to address the situation. He clarified, "A fraudulent email has been circulated that appears to come from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. This is obviously a fake, and nothing in the highly offensive, hurtful message reflects the mission or actions of Penn or of Penn GSE." The motivation behind the breach seems to be an attempt to undermine alumni contributions, as the hackers explicitly urged alumni to cease their donations. This incident follows the university's recent rejection of a controversial proposal from the White House, which sought to align with conservative political agendas in exchange for federal funding. The proposed 'Compact for Academic Excellence in Higher Education' demanded universities to abolish affirmative action, impose stricter admissions criteria, and adopt policies that would marginalize transgender and gender non-conforming individuals. Penn President J. Larry Jameson articulated his concerns about the proposal, stating that it undermines the essential values of viewpoint diversity and freedom of expression that universities uphold in a democratic society.
