United Airlines has announced significant updates to its mobile app for both iOS and Android users, aimed at improving the travel experience by providing estimated TSA security wait times. This enhancement comes amid challenges stemming from a partial government shutdown that has resulted in understaffed TSA checkpoints. Travelers can now access real-time security wait times for United’s major U.S. hub airports, including Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, New York/Newark, San Francisco, and Washington D.C. The app will display wait times for various lanes, such as standard security and TSA PreCheck, helping passengers better plan their arrival at the airport. Jason Birnbaum, United’s chief information officer, expressed appreciation for TSA agents' efforts, noting that although many have recently received back pay, ongoing issues from the Department of Homeland Security shutdown still affect airport operations. "Our customers depend on our mobile app for their travel needs. This new feature will help them anticipate wait times and plan accordingly," he stated in a press release. In addition to wait times, the app will assist passengers with connecting flights by providing personalized, step-by-step directions to their next gate, including estimated walking times and real-time status updates. The app will also alert passengers if United can hold their flight for those with tight connections. Moreover, United's mobile app introduces automatic rebooking assistance. This feature will enable travelers to receive alternative flight options without the need to wait in long lines or search manually, alongside baggage tracking information and potentially available meal and hotel vouchers in cases of delays or cancellations. The app has also integrated Apple’s “Share Item Location” feature for AirTag users, allowing travelers to share their baggage location with United’s customer service if their luggage is lost. Additionally, users will receive text updates with real-time radar maps to keep them informed about how weather conditions may impact their flights across the country.
