Mystery drone sightings reported over critical infrastructure in northern Germany

Authorities in Germany are probing reports of unidentified drones that may have surveilled critical infrastructure in Schleswig-Holstein. Sightings of these mysterious flying objects were first reported on September 25, with multiple drones allegedly spotted above a power plant in Kiel, as well as near a university hospital and a shipyard, according to a report by Der Spiegel. Regional Interior Minister Sabine Sütterlin-Waack informed a parliamentary committee that various types and sizes of drones have been observed in the area. Chief Public Prosecutor Stephanie Gropp confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to determine the nature and intent behind these drone activities. The sightings come at a time when NATO countries, including Germany, are on high alert due to recent incidents involving foreign drones. Polish forces, for instance, recently shot down Russian drones that were purportedly infringing on Polish airspace, while Estonia experienced a breach from a Russian fighter jet. Adding to the tension, Denmark has seen a rise in drone incidents, which has prompted Schleswig-Holstein to enhance its defenses in collaboration with neighboring states. Despite the heightened vigilance, German officials are advising caution regarding the interpretation of these drone sightings. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt emphasized that not every drone operated by foreign entities poses an immediate threat, suggesting that some incidents could simply be provocations. He stressed the need for authorities to respond appropriately based on the specific circumstances of each sighting. According to Der Spiegel, two small drones were detected over the facilities of TKMS, a maritime defense technology company, late Thursday. Subsequently, a coordinated formation of drones was seen over the university hospital and the power plant, with additional sightings reported near government buildings and the Heide oil refinery. Furthermore, drones were observed over a military base in Sanitz, located in the neighboring state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Requests for comments from federal and state authorities regarding the investigation have yet to be addressed.
