Exploring the science of “tundra tongue”

The iconic scene from the 1983 film, A Christmas Story, where a young boy’s tongue gets stuck to a frigid metal post, resonates with many childhood memories. This unusual occurrence, often dubbed 'tundra tongue,' was first named in a 1996 case study. But how hazardous is this phenomenon, and what is the safest way to detach one’s tongue without causing damage? Anders Hagen Jarmund, a graduate student at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), found himself grappling with these questions after experiencing tundra tongue during his own childhood. Inspired by his memories, he embarked on a scientific investigation as part of his master’s thesis, enlisting the help of several colleagues. Their research culminated in two published papers: one in the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology and the other in Head & Face Medicine. Jarmund reminisces about his upbringing in the small, wintery town of Hattfjelldal, recalling an incident where his tongue became stuck to a metal post at school. He wasn’t alone; many of his friends encountered the same predicament, prompting curiosity about the potential dangers associated with such an experience. This concern was echoed in Norway, which enacted a law in 1998 to ban bare metal on playground equipment due to the risks involved. To delve deeper into the phenomenon, Jarmund and his team conducted an extensive review of historical newspaper records. Their research uncovered 113 documented instances of tundra tongue across Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. The earliest recorded case dates back to 1845, involving a French schoolboy who froze his tongue to a metal bridge, resulting in skin loss when he attempted to pull away. This historical context sheds light on the real dangers of such a seemingly innocent childhood mishap.
