The most popular AI apps might not be what you'd expect

A recent analysis has revealed surprising insights into the most popular AI applications currently dominating the market. While ChatGPT continues to reign as the top AI app and website, a semi-annual report from Andreessen Horowitz highlights a diverse range of other contenders that might not be familiar to many users. The report features a comprehensive list divided into web products and mobile applications, with ChatGPT occupying the top spot in both categories. However, as one delves deeper into the rankings, various lesser-known applications come to light. Olivia Moore, a partner at Az16, compiled these lists using analytics from SimilarWeb for web products and Sensor Tower for mobile apps, reflecting user behavior over the past six months. Interestingly, several of the applications listed cater primarily to Chinese users, such as Doubao from ByteDance, which ranked fourth among mobile apps. Due to the restriction of popular tools like ChatGPT in China, alternative AI applications have emerged to fill the gap for local users. Other notable mentions include Quark from Alibaba and Kimi, both of which are also ranked within the top 20. In addition, some applications are designed in China but target global markets, including DeepSeek, Kling, and SeaArt. A few of these popular tools may not be groundbreaking innovations; instead, they often serve as enhanced selfie editing tools, like FaceApp and BeautyPlus. On a personal note, it was gratifying to see the plant identification app Pl@ntNet make it to 50th place, surpassing Meta AI's standalone application. One striking observation from the report is the prevalence of companion chatbots among the top 50 products. Approximately 20% of the applications on the list function as companion chatbots, which aligns with the widespread use of ChatGPT in this manner. Notably, Elon Musk's Grok has also gained significant attention for its new character companion chat features. However, the popularity of these companion AI chatbots raises concerns, especially regarding their impact on younger audiences. Recent reports have highlighted troubling incidents, including a tragic case involving a teenager who took his own life after prolonged conversations with ChatGPT. In response to such incidents, OpenAI has announced that it is developing new safeguards for sensitive situations. Meanwhile, Meta faces scrutiny over its AI products' interactions with children, prompting calls for accountability from several senators. Given the current landscape, the ongoing popularity of companion AI applications, despite their potential risks, raises questions about public perception and acceptance. It will be interesting to see how these trends evolve in the coming years and whether they will alter the rankings in future reports.
