The case of the coke-snorting Chihuahua

Dog owners are well aware that their pets often scavenge for food, but sometimes this behavior can lead to dangerous situations. A recent case reported in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science highlights the alarming incident of a chihuahua that ingested a substantial amount of cocaine. This case underscores the importance of vigilance in preventing pets from consuming harmful substances. In this particular instance, the two-year-old male chihuahua was brought to a veterinary clinic after displaying severe lethargy and unresponsiveness. His owners discovered him with his tongue protruding and his gaze unfocused. Although this chihuahua primarily lived outdoors, he was also allowed inside the home, where he had received all his vaccinations. Upon examination, veterinarians noted several concerning signs, including bradycardia, which is a notably slow heart rate, a bluish tint to the dog’s mucous membranes—indicating a possible lack of oxygen—and dilated pupils. Fortunately, after administering atropine and epinephrine, the dog's condition began to improve. He was subsequently transferred to a veterinary teaching hospital for further evaluation. Testing revealed positive results for cocaine in the dog's urine, along with traces of fentanyl, confirmed through liquid chromatography. Experts estimate that the chihuahua might have ingested or snorted as much as 96 mg of cocaine. While the dog had a history of consuming inappropriate items, the owners reported that they had no prescription medications missing and no controlled substances or illegal drugs in their household. Veterinary professionals emphasize the value of case reports like this one, as they provide crucial real-world insights that controlled studies may overlook. "These reports help us understand unusual clinical scenarios and enhance our emergency response protocols," said Jake Johnson, co-author of the study from North Carolina State University. This case serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers pets face and the importance of monitoring their environments closely.
