Blacklisted by the U.S. and backed by Beijing, this Chinese AI startup has caught OpenAI's attention

In the escalating global competition for artificial intelligence supremacy, OpenAI is highlighting a lesser-known Chinese startup, Zhipu AI, which has emerged as a significant player in the AI landscape. In a recent blog post, OpenAI acknowledged the substantial advancements made by Zhipu AI, suggesting that it is at the forefront of China’s ambitions in AI development. Founded in 2019, Zhipu AI has earned its reputation as one of China’s 'AI tigers,' a term used by domestic media to describe a group of promising startups in the field of large language models. These companies are deemed vital to China's strategy of reducing reliance on American technology while competing globally. While another notable firm, DeepSeek, has garnered considerable international attention following the launch of its R1 model earlier this year, OpenAI emphasizes that Zhipu AI's connections with the Chinese government warrant closer examination. State media reports indicate that the startup has secured funding from various local governments, with OpenAI estimating that state-backed investments in Zhipu AI exceed $1.4 billion. Zhipu AI maintains a presence beyond China, with offices in regions including the Middle East, the UK, Singapore, and Malaysia. The company is also engaged in collaborative projects termed 'innovation centers' across Southeast Asia, specifically in countries like Indonesia and Vietnam. These initiatives could position Zhipu AI as a pivotal contributor to China's 'Digital Silk Road' strategy, which aims to embed Chinese technology standards in emerging markets before competition from the U.S. or Europe can take hold. OpenAI notes that Zhipu AI is promoting a narrative of being a 'responsible, transparent, and audit-ready' alternative in AI. Although Zhipu AI did not provide immediate feedback on OpenAI’s claims, Chairman Liu Debing recently expressed ambitions for the company to extend China's AI capabilities globally. This development poses a challenge to OpenAI, which has garnered backing from the U.S. government to establish its AI models as the premier choice worldwide. During a recent visit to the UAE, former President Donald Trump announced over $200 billion in commercial agreements, including plans for a significant AI campus in collaboration with OpenAI and others, set to launch in 2026. Zhipu AI is reportedly involved with China's military modernization efforts through advanced AI applications, leading to its addition to the U.S. Commerce Department's Entity List earlier this year. Furthermore, the startup is contemplating an initial public offering, having previously been valued at approximately 20 billion yuan, or $2.78 billion, according to local reports.
