Ultrahuman ramps up U.S. push with Ring Pro as Oura tightens its grip

Ultrahuman, a health-tech startup based in Bengaluru, is reigniting its U.S. operations with the approval of its latest product, the Ring Pro. This development sets the stage for a renewed competition with Oura, a rival that has solidified its market position during Ultrahuman's absence. The recent approval was granted by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, just weeks after the global launch of the Ring Pro in late February. This move follows a significant ruling by the U.S. International Trade Commission that favored Oura, subsequently restricting Ultrahuman’s smart ring imports into the U.S. This setback resulted in estimated losses of up to $50 million for Ultrahuman, as it was unable to import its previous model, the Ring Air. In a recent interview, CEO Mohit Kumar explained the impact of these restrictions on sales. The U.S. remains a vital market for smart rings, projected to sell around 2.6 million units by 2025, representing approximately 60% of the global market. According to IDC data shared with TechCrunch, this market is expected to grow at an impressive rate of 59% year-over-year. However, during Ultrahuman’s import restrictions, its market share plummeted from 24.6% in Q2 2025 to low single digits by year-end, while Oura’s share surged from 63.3% to 85%. Historically, the U.S. contributed nearly half of Ultrahuman’s revenue, but this figure has diminished as the company expanded its reach into European and Asian markets. Kumar, however, remains optimistic about regaining lost ground, estimating that it will take about five to six months to fully ramp up operations in the U.S. market. The Ring Pro features a new unibody metal design that not only helped secure U.S. clearance but also boasts enhancements such as extended battery life and improved on-device processing capabilities. Pre-orders for the Ring Pro have already begun, with shipping scheduled to start on May 15. The device is priced at $399, with an introductory offer of $349 for the first 1,000 customers. In addition to their U.S. ambitions, Ultrahuman faces fresh competition as Oura has recently entered the Indian market with its Ring 4. Kumar expressed confidence in the long-term growth potential in India, even as competition heats up. Despite a 30.6% decline in smart ring shipments in India in 2025, Ultrahuman led the market with a 30.4% share, according to a recent IDC report. Looking ahead, Ultrahuman is not just focusing on smart rings; Kumar hinted at plans for a new wearable device aimed at tracking different biomarkers. Currently, Ultrahuman monitors various health metrics, including heart rate, sleep stages, and blood oxygen levels, as it seeks to expand its product line and enhance user experience.
