Russian drones use Starlink, but Ukraine has plan to block their Internet access

In a strategic move to counter the threat posed by Russian drones utilizing Starlink technology, Ukraine and SpaceX are collaborating to tighten control over the satellite broadband network. The Ukrainian government is set to implement a system that requires all Starlink terminals to be registered in order to function within the country. According to a recent announcement from the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, only terminals that are verified and listed on an official whitelist will be permitted to operate. This measure is deemed crucial for safeguarding Ukrainian lives and protecting vital energy infrastructure from potential drone strikes. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has been vocal about the measures being taken. He stated that the introduction of a whitelist is the only viable technical solution to mitigate the threat posed by unauthorized Starlink usage. His agency reached out to SpaceX soon after reports surfaced about Russian drones equipped with Starlink, and he indicated that the company responded promptly to address the issue. Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX, confirmed that steps have been taken to halt the unauthorized use of Starlink by Russia, expressing optimism that these efforts are effective. Fedorov mentioned that as a result of the initial actions taken, no Ukrainian casualties have been reported from drone attacks utilizing Starlink connectivity. In the coming days, the Ukrainian government will provide guidance to residents on how to register their Starlink terminals. The process is designed to be straightforward, with minimal bureaucracy. Citizens will only need to make a single visit to their nearest Administrative Services Center, while businesses will have the option for online verification. Military personnel will follow a distinct registration process to ensure their terminals remain connected and functional.
