In a significant move aimed at safeguarding children, U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer revealed on Monday a plan to prohibit social media usage for individuals under the age of 16. This comprehensive ban will extend to popular platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and X, while messaging applications like WhatsApp and Signal will remain unaffected. The initiative also introduces constraints on artificial intelligence tools, stipulating that AI-powered chatbots designed as "romantic companions" must be accessible exclusively to adults over 18. Starmer emphasized that the U.K.'s regulations would surpass those of any other nation in scope, with the aim of implementing these measures by the upcoming spring. This announcement aligns the U.K. with a growing international trend, as several countries, including Australia—who first enacted such a ban last year—along with Canada, France, and Denmark, are exploring similar restrictions to enhance online safety for children. The British government expressed its commitment to empowering parents and ensuring that children can enjoy a safer childhood. Starmer stated, "Every parent can see it with their own eyes, social media is making children unhappy," highlighting concerns over bullying, mental health deterioration, and exposure to harmful content. He criticized the addictive nature of social media, pointing out features like infinite scrolling that keep users engaged for extended periods. While the government has acknowledged the complexities involved in enforcing a blanket ban, Starmer remains optimistic about its feasibility. Earlier this year, the government sought input from parents, youth, and civil society to gauge the potential effectiveness of such a prohibition. Notably, a substantial 83% of participating parents indicated that they believe the risks associated with social media outweigh its benefits.
