Google ordered to put clearer links in AI search and let UK publishers opt out

In a landmark decision, UK regulators have instructed Google to improve the clarity of attributions and links to publishers’ content within its AI-generated search functionalities. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has also mandated that publishers be given the option to opt out of AI features in search results. This historic ruling empowers publishers, including news organizations, by providing them with effective tools to prevent their content from being utilized in AI features like AI Overviews. The CMA stated, "This will strengthen publishers' positions in negotiating content agreements with Google." To enhance consumer trust, Google is now obligated to ensure that publisher content is accurately attributed, with clearly identifiable links in AI-generated search outcomes. Crucially, the CMA ruled that Google cannot penalize publishers who choose to opt out of AI features, guaranteeing that their search rankings in standard results remain unaffected. Google has been given a nine-month timeframe to adhere to these new requirements, although the CMA anticipates that significant aspects of the changes will be implemented much sooner. Additionally, Google must generate and publish compliance reports detailing the adjustments made and the metrics used to track adherence to these new rules. The CMA's decision follows its determination of Google’s “strategic market status” in the realm of general search services, amid ongoing investigations into competitors like Apple and Microsoft. In response to the ruling, Google has committed to aligning with the CMA’s directives.
