Anthropic’s latest AI model ‘Mythos’ triggers urgent risk review by UK regulators: Report

Anthropic has recently unveiled its advanced AI model, "Claude Mythos," aimed at revolutionizing cybersecurity. However, this launch has sparked urgent discussions among regulatory bodies in the UK and the US due to potential risk factors. In light of these concerns, British financial regulators are actively engaging with banks and cybersecurity experts to assess the implications of Mythos. Reports indicate that key financial institutions, including the Bank of England, the Financial Conduct Authority, and the Treasury, are collaborating with the National Cyber Security Centre to determine whether the new AI model could threaten financial IT systems. Regulators are expected to brief banks, insurers, and exchanges within the next two weeks regarding the cybersecurity threats associated with Claude Mythos. Alongside this, Anthropic has introduced "Project Glasswing" to facilitate the deployment of Mythos, partnering with major corporations such as Google, Apple, and various financial entities to broaden its use in critical infrastructure. The company claims to have discovered thousands of Zero-day vulnerabilities and long-standing flaws. Nonetheless, there are apprehensions surrounding the dual-use nature of the technology, with fears that it could be misused by malicious parties. In a related development, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent convened an urgent meeting with top executives from Wall Street banks to deliberate on the cybersecurity risks posed by the new AI model. Notable attendees included leaders from JPMorgan, Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Wells Fargo, according to a Bloomberg report. Adding to the complexities, Anthropic is embroiled in a legal dispute with the Trump Administration and the Pentagon over its blacklisting and the designation of a "supply chain risk." A recent ruling by a federal court in Washington, D.C. upheld the Pentagon's national security blacklisting of the company.
