UK may require Google to give users alternative search options and rank its results ‘more fairly’

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the United Kingdom has announced plans to reconsider Google's market status, potentially imposing significant changes on how the tech giant operates. On Tuesday, the CMA revealed that it may require Google to offer users alternative search options and rank its results in a more equitable manner. This initiative falls under the newly established Digital Markets Competition Regime, which took effect earlier this year. The CMA is set to launch a consultation regarding the designation of Google as having 'strategic market status.' This label, according to the CMA, applies to companies that hold a dominant position within their sector, which would compel Google to implement various measures aimed at promoting fairness and competition. Among the proposed changes are the introduction of choice screens that would allow users to select and switch between different search services, including potential integration with AI assistants. Furthermore, the CMA suggests that Google should adopt fair ranking principles for its search results, grant publishers greater authority over how their content is utilized in Google's AI offerings, and facilitate the transfer of user data, such as search history. CMA chief executive Sarah Cardell highlighted the significance of these changes, noting that UK businesses spent over £33,000 per advertiser on Google search ads last year. "Google search represents over 90% of all general search queries in the UK, making it a vital access point to the internet. If competition were functioning effectively, we would expect these costs to be lower," Cardell remarked. She further emphasized that these targeted actions are designed to empower UK businesses and consumers with more choices and control over their interactions with Google's search services. Additionally, these measures aim to foster greater innovation within the UK tech industry and the wider economy. The CMA is currently seeking feedback on this proposed designation and its implications from industry stakeholders, with a decision expected by October 13. Google has not yet responded to requests for comment regarding these developments.
