The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the United Kingdom has unveiled a significant proposal aimed at granting 'strategic market status' to the mobile platforms operated by Apple and Google. This designation would empower the CMA to implement regulations that could fundamentally alter the functioning of their app stores and mobile software. The intent behind this initiative is to foster a more open and competitive landscape for the app economy, enhancing choices for users. However, both Apple and Google have expressed their opposition to the proposed changes. Apple argues that such modifications could jeopardize user security and privacy, raising concerns about the potential impact on their existing systems. A conclusive decision from the CMA is anticipated in October, following presentations from both tech giants defending their positions. Should the proposal be approved, it would enable the CMA to tackle various critical issues, including in-app purchase commission rates, the app review process, app rankings, and restrictions that currently limit developers' access to specific technologies. Additionally, it could address default settings that may stifle competition. Tim Sweeney, the CEO of Epic Games, known for its involvement in ongoing antitrust litigation against these tech behemoths, voiced his disappointment regarding the proposed regulatory framework. He noted that it falls short of allowing for alternative mobile app stores, such as the Epic Games Store, which he believes is essential for true competition.
