The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) in the United Kingdom has put forth a significant proposal aimed at granting Apple and Google’s mobile platforms what is termed 'strategic market status'. This designation would empower the CMA to implement regulations that could fundamentally alter the operation of these companies' app stores and the functionality of their mobile software. This initiative seeks to foster a more open and competitive landscape within the app economy, ultimately enhancing user choice. However, both Apple and Google have voiced strong objections to the proposal. Apple, in particular, argues that these changes could jeopardize user security and privacy. A definitive ruling on this proposal is expected in October, following presentations from both tech giants. Should the CMA's proposal be approved, it would enable the authority to tackle several critical issues, including the commission fees associated with in-app purchases, the app review processes, the ranking of applications, and restrictions that developers face in accessing certain technologies. These regulations could lead to a reduction in competition and could also impact default settings within the platforms. Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, who has been actively engaged in antitrust litigation against these tech behemoths, has expressed his discontent with the proposed framework, noting that it does not accommodate the possibility of rival mobile app stores like the Epic Games Store.
