In a significant crackdown, law enforcement in the United Kingdom announced the arrest of four suspects connected to a wave of cyberattacks that recently plagued the retail industry. On Thursday, the National Crime Agency (NCA) revealed that a 20-year-old woman, along with two 19-year-old men and a 17-year-old youth, were detained across various locations in the UK. These individuals face serious charges, including hacking, blackmail, money laundering, and involvement in organized crime. While the NCA has not disclosed their identities, the arrests are linked to a string of high-profile breaches affecting well-known retailers such as Marks & Spencer, Harrods, and the Co-op. The hacking spree reportedly began in April when cybercriminals infiltrated the Co-op's systems, subsequently moving on to Marks & Spencer. Investigators have attributed these attacks to a group called Scattered Spider, which employs sophisticated tactics involving impersonation to deceive call center staff and gain unauthorized access to corporate networks. Evidence suggests that these hackers provided access to a ransomware organization known as DragonForce, allowing them to unleash damaging malware on Marks & Spencer's infrastructure. In a fortunate turn of events, the Co-op managed to avert a ransomware crisis by disconnecting its network before the malware could be triggered. Harrods also reported successfully defending against a significant portion of the cyber threat directed at them.
