The United Kingdom is set to embark on an ambitious journey into the realm of artificial intelligence with the introduction of a localized version of the Stargate project. This initiative is made possible through a collaboration between OpenAI, Nvidia, and Nscale, announced during President Donald Trump’s recent state visit. The UK’s Stargate rollout is backed by substantial investment commitments from major tech players, including up to $30 billion from Microsoft, $15 billion from Nvidia, and $5 billion from Google. While this funding will significantly bolster AI infrastructure in Britain, it remains a fraction of the staggering $500 billion Stargate initiative unveiled in the United States earlier this year, which Trump proclaimed as the largest AI infrastructure endeavor in history. Much of the UK funding is still in the commitment phase rather than actual expenditures. Meanwhile, the US counterpart of the Stargate project, which includes partnerships with OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, has already secured a monumental $300 billion cloud agreement with Oracle. The timeline for the UK projects is projected to start in 2026, featuring plans for the deployment of tens of thousands of graphics processing units (GPUs), expansion of data center capabilities, and the establishment of the country's largest supercomputer. This local computing power will be essential for running OpenAI’s models in sensitive sectors such as finance, national security, and scientific research. OpenAI intends to procure 8,000 Nvidia GPUs by early 2026, with plans to increase this number to 31,000 over time. Nscale also announced an expansion into several sites, including Cobalt Park in northeast England, which will be part of a newly established "AI Growth Zone." OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, highlighted the UK’s historical significance in the AI field, noting its wealth of world-class researchers and a government that recognizes the potential of AI technology. He stated, "Stargate UK builds on this foundation to help accelerate scientific breakthroughs, improve productivity, and drive economic growth." The announcement coincided with a three-day visit by Trump, during which the US and UK solidified a "Tech Prosperity Deal" valued at approximately £31 billion (around $42 billion), aimed at enhancing collaboration in AI, quantum computing, and civil nuclear energy. As part of this initiative, Microsoft has committed to constructing the UK's largest supercomputer, equipped with over 23,000 Nvidia GPUs. Additionally, Nvidia revealed plans to establish new "AI factories" across Britain, a move that Prime Minister Keir Starmer has described as a crucial step towards positioning the UK as a global leader in AI. In conjunction with these infrastructure developments, OpenAI has announced the creation of the OpenAI Academy, an educational platform designed to upskill 7.5 million workers in the UK by the year 2030.
