As of Friday, the United Kingdom has officially begun enforcing a law that mandates age verification for users accessing pornography websites. According to reports from the BBC, approximately 6,000 adult sites are now taking steps to comply with the Online Safety Act by implementing age checks. However, it's notable that at least one major site had not yet adopted these measures by Friday morning. In addition to adult content, the law extends its reach to various online platforms, requiring them to shield children from potentially harmful material. This has prompted sites such as Reddit, Bluesky, X, and Grindr to initiate age verification processes, which may involve users submitting selfies or government-issued identification. This legislation is part of a broader movement towards enhancing child protection online and could set a precedent for similar regulations worldwide, as highlighted by Wired. However, this approach has faced criticism from organizations like the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which argue that it poses a significant risk to online privacy and anonymity. A recent incident involving the dating safety app Tea exemplified these concerns, as many of the compromised images were selfies and IDs submitted for account verification. In response to these new regulations, some internet users may attempt to bypass age verification by utilizing fake IDs, images of video game characters, or virtual private networks (VPNs).
