In a strategic move to invigorate the artificial intelligence industry, the UK government has announced a commitment to purchase innovative chip technology from domestic firms. This initiative, valued at £100 million (approximately $130 million), aims to foster growth within the AI sector, particularly benefiting startups focused on AI hardware. Science Secretary Liz Kendall emphasized that the government will provide guaranteed payments to British companies developing AI hardware that can enhance sectors including life sciences and financial services. This commitment mirrors the approach taken during the procurement of COVID vaccines, wherein the government will pledge to buy AI inference chips that meet specific performance criteria. While acknowledging that £100 million may seem modest compared to the vast investments seen in the US and China, Kendall asserted that this initiative showcases the government's commitment to leading in areas where the UK can excel on the global stage. The UK’s AI market, currently valued at over £72 billion ($94 billion), ranks as the third largest worldwide, trailing only behind the US and China. Despite its potential, investment in AI within the UK remains significantly lower than in the US. In 2024, the US recorded private investments in AI at $109.1 billion, starkly contrasting with the UK's $4.5 billion, as reported by the Stanford AI Index. Although the specifics of the proposed advance payment mechanism were not fully detailed, Kendall assured that British chip manufacturers would be informed that the government would purchase their technology once it meets established standards.
