UK antitrust regulator takes aim at Google’s search dominance

Google's dominance in the search engine market is under scrutiny as the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has officially recognized the tech giant's 'strategic market status.' This designation, which aligns with the UK's recent digital markets competition framework, signals potential regulatory changes aimed at curbing Google's business practices within the country. The CMA's investigation concluded that Google possesses substantial and entrenched market power, particularly in search and search advertising, where it commands over 90% of the UK market share. While this designation does not imply any wrongdoing or immediate regulatory action, it sets the stage for future interventions aimed at enhancing competition. In the context of rising competition from AI-driven search services, Google has defended its position by pointing to the increasing number of AI companies entering the market. However, the CMA has clarified that Google's Gemini AI assistant does not fall under the strategic market status evaluation, but various AI features related to search are included. As part of its efforts to ensure a competitive landscape, the CMA plans to initiate consultations later this year regarding potential interventions. Among the anticipated measures are options that could empower publishers with greater control over their data and introduce 'choice screens' to offer users alternatives to Google. Expectations are set for the announcement of significant regulatory actions by the first half of 2026.
