Ubuntu infrastructure has been down for more than a day

On Thursday morning, Ubuntu and its parent company Canonical experienced a significant disruption, with their servers going offline and remaining inaccessible for over 24 hours. This outage has hindered the operating system provider's ability to communicate effectively, particularly following a poorly timed disclosure of a critical vulnerability. Users trying to access various Ubuntu and Canonical websites or download OS updates have encountered persistent failures. In contrast, updates from mirror sites have been functioning as expected. According to a statement on Canonical's status page, the company is facing a 'sustained, cross-border attack' and is actively working to resolve the issue. Since the incident began, there has been little communication from officials at Ubuntu and Canonical. However, a group with ties to the Iranian government has claimed responsibility for the disruption. Through posts on platforms like Telegram and other social media, they have announced that they executed a DDoS attack using a tool named Beam. This operation is marketed as a means to test server resilience under heavy loads but is often utilized to target and incapacitate external websites. Notably, this same group has also taken credit for recent DDoS attacks against eBay.
