Ubuntu services hit by outages after DDoS attack

A significant disruption has hit the popular Linux operating system, Ubuntu, as well as its parent company, Canonical, following a claimed DDoS attack by a group of hacktivists. The assault commenced on Thursday and has severely impacted critical services relied upon by Ubuntu users. Canonical acknowledged the situation on its website, stating, "Our web infrastructure is under a sustained, cross-border attack, and we are working diligently to resolve the issues. We will update our official channels with more information as it becomes available." The attack, characterized as a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) assault, inundates the target with excessive traffic, ultimately leading to service overload or crashes. Discussions on an unofficial Ubuntu community forum suggest that the attack has compromised Ubuntu's security API and several Canonical websites. Reports from a threat intelligence forum indicate that the DDoS attack has hindered users from updating or installing Ubuntu, with TechCrunch confirming failed updates on a test device running the OS. As of now, the outage has persisted for approximately 20 hours, with Canonical not providing any comments regarding the situation. The group identifying itself as The Islamic Cyber Resistance in Iraq 313 Team took to Telegram to claim responsibility for the attack. They alleged the use of a DDoS-for-hire service known as Beamed, which allows individuals to initiate DDoS attacks without needing extensive technical knowledge. This service reportedly supports attacks exceeding 3.5 Tbps, which is notable, given that Cloudflare previously reported one of the largest DDoS attacks at around 6 Tbps. For years, law enforcement agencies like the FBI and Europol have been actively combating such services, attempting to shut them down and arrest those behind them. The ongoing situation with Ubuntu underscores the persistent threat posed by hacktivist groups and the challenges faced by organizations in maintaining digital security.
