Uber misses on revenue but issues higher-than-expected bookings guidance

Uber's first-quarter earnings report revealed a revenue shortfall, yet the ride-hailing titan provided a promising outlook for bookings in the upcoming quarter, surpassing analysts' predictions. Following the earnings announcement, Uber's stock surged by 9%. The company disclosed a significant decline in net income, which was adversely affected by a $1.5 billion revaluation of equity investments. On a non-GAAP basis, Uber reported earnings per share of 72 cents. The dip in net income was stark, falling to $263 million from $1.78 billion in the same quarter last year, primarily due to the pre-tax challenges posed by the revaluation of its investments in Asian companies Didi and Grab. Despite the revenue miss, which stemmed from the performance of its mobility sector, Uber's overall revenue increased by 14% to $11.5 billion compared to the previous year. The delivery segment, which is the company's fastest-growing area, achieved remarkable success, with a 34% revenue jump to $5.07 billion, exceeding the expected $4.89 billion. Growth in this segment was particularly robust in markets like Australia, Japan, and the U.K. Uber's mobility business saw a modest 5% revenue increase, reaching $6.8 billion, but this was below the anticipated $7.11 billion. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi noted that the company is navigating a "complex macro backdrop" influenced by weather disruptions and geopolitical tensions, which have led to a nearly 50% surge in gas prices in the U.S. since February. This spike poses significant challenges for drivers who bear the fuel costs. To alleviate some of these pressures, Uber introduced fuel discounts and additional offers for drivers, expected to last until late May. In the first quarter, Uber facilitated 3.6 billion trips, with gross bookings rising by 25% to $53.7 billion, surpassing the average estimate of $52.8 billion. For the second quarter, the company anticipates bookings between $56.25 billion and $57.75 billion, ahead of the $56.17 billion consensus estimate. In addition to its current offerings, Uber is making strides in the autonomous vehicle (AV) sector, planning to acquire AVs from partners like Waabi, Wayve, Rivian, and Nuro once they meet safety validation standards. The company is also collaborating with robotaxi service providers, such as Waymo and WeRide, to integrate self-driving vehicles into its app. Furthermore, Uber is innovating within the AV industry by providing services like customized insurance and training data. To enhance efficiency and cut costs, Uber has embraced artificial intelligence, with 95% of its engineers utilizing AI coding tools on a monthly basis. Remarkably, over 10% of the company's code is now generated autonomously by AI agents. Executives are set to elaborate on these developments in a call with analysts at 8 a.m. ET.
