Uber's ambitions for growth in Europe have encountered significant obstacles. Initially, the company revealed plans to expand into seven new European countries by 2026. However, recent reports from the Financial Times indicate that five of these expansions, including those in Austria, Norway, and Greece, are now stalled. In a statement to the Financial Times, Uber acknowledged the decision, highlighting that its recent entries into Finland and Denmark have been met with considerable success. The company expressed a desire to concentrate on building on this momentum rather than pursuing new markets for the time being. Another crucial element influencing this decision appears to be Uber's ongoing efforts to acquire Delivery Hero, a European competitor that turned down a €10 billion offer from Uber in May. Sources within the industry suggest that pausing expansion could mitigate antitrust concerns surrounding the acquisition, particularly given that Delivery Hero operates in several of the countries that were initially targeted for expansion.
