Uber CEO on the most promising way to succeed with AI: Throw out the old policies

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Uber's CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized the importance of rethinking traditional policies to fully harness the potential of artificial intelligence. He noted that many businesses are merely 'play-acting' in their AI transformations by adopting superficial changes rather than implementing meaningful shifts in their operations. Khosrowshahi pointed out that tasks such as summarizing client pitches with AI are low-hanging fruit that won't set companies apart in a competitive landscape. He shared insights from Uber's journey, highlighting that while the company initially saw some success by applying AI within existing frameworks, true innovation emerged only after developers overhauled these frameworks entirely. By setting clear objectives for AI applications—like enhancing customer satisfaction—Uber found a more effective pathway to integration. Khosrowshahi believes that discarding outdated policies and allowing AI to operate without constraints is the key to unlocking its true capabilities. He described companies as fundamentally built on a series of policies and suggested that to leverage AI completely, organizations must dismantle and rebuild these rules from the ground up. Uber is currently using advanced AI tools, including Anysphere's Cursor and Anthropic's Claude, to enhance their services. As businesses ramp up investments in AI with hopes of driving productivity, a recent survey from RBC Capital indicated that 90% of IT professionals plan to increase their AI spending this year. However, concerns persist about AI's effectiveness and its impact on employee skills. Khosrowshahi acknowledged the challenges of AI adoption, remarking that organizations often face significant internal hurdles during the transition.
