Uber has always wanted to be more than a ride; now it has reason to hurry

Uber is intensifying its efforts to transform into a super app, especially following Waymo's recent passenger pickups in San Francisco. This shift underscores Uber's ambition to not only be a ride-hailing service but also a central hub for various consumer needs. At the recent GO-GET product event in New York, Uber unveiled a significant feature: users in the U.S. can now book hotel stays directly through the Uber app, thanks to a partnership with Expedia Group, granting access to over 700,000 properties worldwide. Subscribers to Uber One, priced at $9.99 monthly, receive exclusive discounts—20% off a rotating selection of 10,000 hotels and 10% back in credits. Additionally, users can look forward to vacation rentals via Vrbo later this year and restaurant reservations through OpenTable. The introduction of a “Shop for Me” feature will allow users to order from stores not currently part of the Uber platform, marking a substantial step towards Uber's vision of a comprehensive app. Praveen Neppalli Naga, Uber's CTO, elaborated on this vision during a recent event in San Francisco. He acknowledged that while the super app concept has thrived in regions like India and Southeast Asia, similar attempts in the U.S. have often faltered. His insight emphasizes the importance of creating a compelling reason for users to remain engaged with the app, with membership being a key factor. As new categories such as hotels and groceries are introduced, they provide additional incentives for users to subscribe to Uber One. Although flight bookings are not yet available, Naga hinted that they are a possibility for the future. He reflected on past attempts to include flight bookings in Europe, which did not succeed, stating that the priority now is to solidify hotel bookings. Financial services could also be on the horizon, with Uber already offering a debit card to drivers in Mexico. Uber is not the only player in this competitive landscape. Airbnb has also announced its own transportation initiatives, partnering with Welcome Pickups to facilitate airport transfers across multiple cities, aiming to keep users engaged within the Airbnb app. Furthermore, Elon Musk has been working on transforming X into an all-encompassing platform similar to WeChat, with the anticipated launch of X Money. The pressing question remains: how many super apps can the U.S. market accommodate? Unlike China, where WeChat thrives due to the lack of diverse alternatives, American consumers are already accustomed to a variety of apps for their needs. To encourage users to consolidate their services within Uber, the company must offer compelling reasons or a seamless user experience. Uber believes that its existing user base, who have already provided their payment information, presents a unique advantage. Recent earnings reports indicate that Uber Eats is a strong part of this strategy, with a remarkable 34% year-over-year growth in delivery revenue, showcasing its potential to rival traditional mobility services. While Uber's stock has faced challenges, down approximately 8% from last year, the company reports 50 million active subscribers to Uber One, accounting for nearly half of its total bookings. This data reflects a growing confidence in Uber's strategy to evolve into a super app, despite the skepticism from market analysts.
