Uber to open 2 campuses in India to support product development, operations

Uber is set to enhance its technological presence in India by launching two new engineering campuses and establishing a data center partnership. The company's plans, announced on Thursday, aim to accommodate approximately 9,600 employees across Bengaluru and Hyderabad by the end of 2027. These campuses will bolster Uber's existing operations in these major Indian cities, recognized as vital centers for software and engineering talent. In addition to the new offices, Uber has teamed up with the Adani Group to construct its inaugural data center in India, which is anticipated to commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2026. This announcement was made during CEO Dara Khosrowshahi's recent visit to the country. Currently, Uber employs around 3,500 individuals in India and is on the lookout for additional technical talent to support its global investments in AI. The company is actively recruiting for various roles in generative AI, machine learning, autonomous vehicle operations, and back-end infrastructure. India has emerged as a crucial hub for engineering and product development for tech giants, owing to its vast pool of software talent. As Uber diversifies its growth strategies beyond ride-hailing, it is making significant investments in AI, automation, and autonomous vehicle technologies. Earlier this year, the company allocated $330 million to its operations in India to reinforce its presence in the region. Despite these ambitious plans, Uber faces challenges in the Indian market, including fierce competition, supply shortages, high driver incentive costs, and fluctuating regulations that have occasionally hindered services in certain cities. The company is also up against local competitors such as Rapido, which Khosrowshahi identified as a major rival, surpassing Ola in terms of competition. Nonetheless, Uber appears committed to positioning India as a central engineering and infrastructure hub to meet the growing demand for AI talent and computing resources.
